Road Tunnel Deluge system operating, a view from above the deluge nozzles, showing the magnitude of the deluge spray and the fire fighting capacity if activated. Generally the specifications for a road tunnel activation area cover the largest vehicle allowed in the tunnel, typically a B-Double semi trailer.Tunnel specific operating parameters are adopted for each system.In event of a deluge system activation, all vehicle traffic has to be stopped prior to activation, as the water deluge is so heavy there is no vision if driving through even a low speeds, and the amount of water on the road surface may cause the vehicle to aquaplane loosing tyre grip on the road and accidents will occur.

Fire Protection Pump Set - Typically Arrangement
Typical Fire Pump assembly to AS2941, one primary electric pump set, and one secondary diesel pump set, each capable of providing 100% system demand capacities, and can if required can run in parallel.Where electric power is unreliable or too expensive to install, twin diesel fire pumps are provided (one primary and one secondary), each capable of providing 100% system demand capacities, and can if required can run in parallel. The testing of these pump sets is very important, if called for in a fire senario, they must operate to the original designed parameters (flows and pressures) to ensure the fire protection system can operate to the design requirements.The fire protection testing code AS1851 covers in detail the testing requirements.

FM200 Fire Suppression Typical cylinder / piping arrangement & Control PanelFM200 Gaseous Fire Suppression System, adjacent is a typical FM200 Gaseous System storage cylinder arrangement. DKnapp Fire Design has had experience with all types of gaseous fire suppression systems (i.e. FM200, Argonite, Inergen, CO2), and can assist in the selection and design of the appropriate system depending on the client specific requirements, complying to either Australian Standards or International codes depending on the clients requirements.The adjacent system has 2 directional control valves, that will when activated allow the cylinder pressure to flow, and depending on the fire location the appropriate directional valve opens directing the FM200 agent to the risk that has a fire condition. This type of system reduces the fixed asset costs, where once cylinder can protect 2 risks. This is only suitable for risks of similar volume.
Where volumes are considerably different, then one cylinder per risk will be required.The fire alarm panels to the right of the FM200 cylinder, is equipped with a dual zone fire circuit (this means that 2 separate fire detection zones, usually one smoke detector and the second thermal detectors), both detection zones must go into a alarm condition, then a 30 second count down begins where the system activation can be ABORTED by pressing a stop gas release station, but the alarm signals are sent even if the gas discharge is aborted! Also evacuation warning lights and sirens activate in the risk are, warning all people to leave the room as gas activation is imamate.
