Victoria Interesting Tunnels

City Link Tunnels 1 & 2, Melbourne Victoria, Australia
These tunnels form part the Melbourne freeway system, linking the city to the south east freeways. There is a section of surface road way that connects the 2 tunnels. These tunnels were constructed at separate stages, years apart, and is a part of the tolled road system in Victoria. This system is feed from towns main supply in a grade 1 configuration, utilising pressure reducing valves to maintain a constant working pressure and not over pressurisation when the towns mains pressure fluctuate regularly. To use the road tunnels in Victoria, there are tolls applicable.
City Link tunnel-pipe connection to cross passage
A view of the piping complexity to achieve the individual deluge zone feed's, to coordinate with other services.Beyond in the lower corner of this photo you can see the deluge valves housed in a fire separated enclosure between tunnel bores (sometimes called a cross passage)
Combined Main Flushing Operation
A view of the tunnel at commissioning stage, where we were flushing the water supply combined fire main, removing any contaminates, prior to final mains hook-up, and then placed into permanent service. This flush was carried out for every 120 metre section of piping installed, same for all tunnels, to ensure there is no debris in the supply piping that can damage / affect the deluge valve operation.

City Link tunnels drivers perspective
City Link Tunnel drivers perspective, not everything above the lighting is blacked out (all infrastructure trades (fire / electrical / Comms / ect), this is so the drivers eyes are on the road and not looking at the stuff on the roofAll road tunnels adopt a similar phiolophy, to ensure drives focus on the road adhead.
