Road & Rail Tunnels Fire Protection System Design
The design of Road and Rail Tunnel Fire Protection System is unique for each system, depending the tunnel usage and what Australian Standards & International codes are adopted, and on the local Fire Brigade requirements. Usually there is a multi level design process consisting of 6 levels (Concept, Preliminary, Detailed, Final, Construction, As Built) consisting of drawings & a design report per discipline involved
Typically in a;-
Typically in a;-
Road Tunnel - an automatic (with a manual override) deluge fire protection system is utilized, using a linear type Fire Detection system to activate the deluge system. A combined main feeding for fire deluge / fire hydrant / fire hose reel system is used, with a grade 1 type water supply usually from both ends of the tunnel, for redundancy in event of a combined main or water supply failure. The design of these system is very complex, and generally complies to AS2118.1, 3 & 6, AS2419, AS 2441, AS2444 & AS 2941 requirements, and incorporating some parts of NFPA & Factory Mutual Codes. Liner Heat detection system, public address system (PA), emergency warning & intercom system (EWIS), fire alarm panel (FIP) and system mimic panel located in the tunnel control room.
Particular attention must be taken in the waste water sump pits, where waste water / fuel / debris is collected, that can build up explosive level of gases, where detection is a critical element in the design, and a foam water deluge system is utilized to douse the entire fluid surface level once the explosive gas concentration get too high, and quell any fires that occur.

Commercial Fire Sprinkler System Design
Usually ordinary hazard type classifications to AS2118, the fire sprinkler design is dependent on the hazard / building classification as defined the Building Code of Australia. Fire system water supplies are directly dependent on the hazard classification.Examples - Warehouses, Shopping Centers, Car Parks, Office Buildings, Hospitals, Hotels, Medical Clinics, Sporting Arena's.
Residential Fire Sprinkler System Design
Typically light hazard or residential classification to AS 2118, utilizing special fire sprinkler heads, at spacing specified on the manufacturers data sheets. Care must be taken when selecting the fire sprinkler head for the risk, taking into consideration the sprinkler orifice size, flow & pressure requirement for the selected head for the spacing. Care must be taken where obstruction under the ceiling occur, to obtain the manufacturers spray patterns.Examples - Apartment Towers, Residential complex's, Aged Care Facilities, Nursing Homes, Retirement Villages.
Warehouse Rack or High Piled Storage Fire Sprinkler System Design
High hazard fire sprinkler protection to AS2118, is dependent on the goods being stored and whether high pile storage or racking is adopted by the client, this determines the design density and sprinkler heads to be selected.
Where racking is being used, there are special large drop sprinkler heads that can be installed at roof level only, thus no requiring in rack sprinkler protection, or in some circumstances additional in-rack protection is required, this is dependent on the stored product and the type of shelving utilized.
The selection of the fire sprinkler heads is critical, and is dependent on the stored goods, stacking heights and storage method (either racking or pallet stacked storage).Examples - Warehouses, bulk storage facilities, Bunning's Stores.

Domestic Fire Sprinkler System Design
This design utilizes special fire sprinkler heads, with similar requirements of a residential system (see above) to AS2118.Examples - Private residences.
Fire Protection System Design using International Codes
Typically the FMG (Factory Mutual Global) or NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) codes are widely utiliesed in Australia. These codes have very specific requirements for the type of sprinkler head selection + spacings, and fire hydrant system requirements. To comply to DFES (Departement of Fire Emergency Service (state specific requirements must be used)) the fire hydrant connection and booster arrangements must be with the local Australian Standard & fire brigade requirements, so care has to be taken to dovetail both codes & local fire brigade requirements into the design, and to provide suitable connections for the local fire brigade appliances (this varies from state to state).
Approval must be sought from both the local fire brigade + the relevant Internation code representative, prior to order any equipment.

Combined Fire Sprinkler System Design
Is a fire protection incorporating both fire sprinklers / fire hydrant / fire hose reel systems to AS2118.6, then specific piping/valve arrangements must be employed as specified in the statutory codes. The fire system water supplies must be capable of meeting both system requirements simultaneously for the required durations as specified in the Australian Standards.Examples - Shopping Centers, Apartment Towers, Office Towers.
Hydraulic Calculations
DKnapp Fire Design utilizes full hydraulic calculations using Hyena, to determine the fire protection system flow and pressure demand requirements based on job specific requirements.
The full calculation report is submitted with node drawings for approval prior to pipe fabrication & are included in the Operations & Maintenance Manuals.

Fire System Water Supplies
Town's Main - The water authority towns main can be utilized if sufficient flow and pressures are available at all times (this will require towns main testing & advise/approval from the water supply authority prior to commencing design. Flow tests are required to prove available flows and pressure by a certified testing agency.
Fire Pumps & Tanks - When town's mains cannot supply the required flows and pressure, or the grade of water supply as specified by the statutorily codes, then fire pumps and fire water storage tanks are required. The fire pump sizing & water storage capacity is dependent on the fire system calculations that determine the system demand requirements.
Water Conservation should be a high priority and adopt suitable procedures not to waste water when carrying out commissioning & routine testing. Especially yearly (annual as specified by AS1851) testing that uses the annubar flow testing facility, so the system can be tested Fire Sprinklers (@ 125%) and were Fire Hydrants are utilized (@ 150%) for a minimum duration to achieve a stable results (usual tests at a minimum 4 test points can take approx. 10 minutes).

Where fire pumps & fire water are involved, the annubar waste pipes are arranged to take the test water back equally into each of the fire water tanks (to obtain the correct results), without disturbing the suction or air rating the fire water tank (as this may create pump suction issues known as cavitation, making the results incorrect).
Where diesel fire pumps are utilised, care must be taken for the noise generated when the pumps are operating, especially in residential areas. Nosie attenuation measure must be used to minimise the external noise to the specified levels or less.
Where towns main only supplies are utilized, the waste water is usually sent to storm water waste, and cannot be reticulated or reused.
